Becoming a board member

  • The Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City seeks candidates for its Board of Directors who are passionate about music, music education, and support CMS’s mission of creating world-class chamber music experiences for the enlightenment, enjoyment, and education of chamber music lovers.

    The following qualifications and skills are of particular interest in our current recruitment process. We would not expect any candidate to possess all of these, but strong candidates will reflect some of the following:

    • Time and commitment to contribute meaningfully to the CMS Board.

    • Racial/ethnic background, community affiliation, and other factors reflective of the Chamber Music Society's diverse stakeholders.

    • Experience/commitment to broadening access – across age, geography, or background – to educational or musical opportunities.

    • Leadership experience in Utah corporations, foundations, or communities. 

    • A passion for fundraising and a capacity to support CMS through charitable giving.

    • Experience in education, music education, and the arts, and/or as a musician and performer.

    • A strong connection with key CMS community and stakeholder groups.

    • “Rising stars” interested in philanthropy and community service.

  • As a member of the Board of Directors, you play a pivotal role in steering the Society towards its financial success and sustainability. Your active participation, dedication, and commitment to ethical leadership are essential to the Society’s continued growth and impact.

    General Expectations:
    As a member of the Board of Directors, you will: 
    • Be a passionate believer in the Society and its values by informing others about the organization and advocating its success with all you come in contact with.
    • Participate in defining the Society’s policies, mission, values, strategies, and goals.
    • Exercise fiduciary responsibility by reviewing financial reports, approving budgets, and ensuring sound financial management practices to support the organization's sustainability.
    • (If applicable) Participate in the selection, fair compensation, support, evaluation, and, if needed, termination of an Executive Director, or other chief executive officer who functions as the board’s sole agent.
    • Suggest possible nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and the organization. 
    • Comply with all legal obligations of a nonprofit board member including, avoiding conflicts of interest, fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities and maintaining confidentiality.
    • Become educated on nonprofit fundraising and continually look for new funding opportunities.


    Fundraising:
    As a member of the Board of Directors, you will: 
    • Make an annual gift to the Society according to your individual means, but in such an amount that you care deeply about how it is spent.  
    • Take personal responsibility for the financial well-being of the Society.  
    • Assist in maintaining and cultivating relationships with active donors. Be willing to use your talents, your contacts, and personal expertise in any way that makes sense and furthers the mission of the organization.  
    • Personally solicit donations from friends and associates each year.  
    • Assist in the implementation of the fundraising strategy for the Society and participate in events, programs and activities.  
    • Disclose all potential conflicts to the board in a timely fashion.

    Legal Responsibilities:
    Utah law mandates that nonprofit board members fulfill the following legal responsibilities:

    Duty of Care — Each board member has a legal responsibility to participate actively in making decisions on behalf of the organization and to exercise their best judgment while doing so.

    Duty of Loyalty — Each board member must put the interests of the organization before their personal and professional interests when acting on behalf of the organization in a decision-making capacity. The organization’s needs come first.

    Duty of Obedience — Board members bear the legal responsibility of ensuring that the organization complies with the applicable federal, state, and local laws and adheres to its mission.
